Trouble Sleeping? Grab a Book!

WRITTEN BY  Ana Patrícia- 13 December 2012

Get a Good Night of Zzz's!

If you're a 'techy' who can't fall asleep, your gadgets and gear could be keeping you awake!

You're in bed, reading an eBook from you're iPad or some sort of device when you decide, time for some shuteye. Device put away, lights go off, you close your eyes and... they're open again, leaving you to count invisible numbered sheep! You felt so tired and ready for bed a short while ago and now you can't seem to fall asleep! But why?

Did you know that it could be those gadgets and tablets and screens that are keeping you awake? Studies found that exposure to the light from these electronic items could in fact, reduce the amount of melatonin our bodies produce by up to 22%. This decreased production of melatonin could affect your circadian rhythm and disrupt your sleeping pattern.

If you have a hard time falling asleep or don't feel well rested the next morning, try reading the old fashioned way again. Connect with the pages of a book, be entertained, and fall asleep. You may be surprised how well reading an actual printed and bound book works as a sleep-inducing method! If you really love the modern e-readers, try and use one that doesn't emit an artificial light.

I can't even count the number of times, the number of evenings, that I've told myself, "Okay. Tomorrow, I will wake up early and exercise before going to work!" I can count the number of times that ever happened in my lifetime: three. Three morning run sessions within the same week...
