To conclude our Tips for Colon Health expert series from Kristin Metvedt...
Part II of Staying Regular
Maintain Health Promoting Microflora:
The colon contains a large amount of bacteria. Several vitamins needed for normal metabolism are produced from the bacteria in the colon, including some B vitamins and vitamin K. Vitamins, short-chain fatty acids and other factors are produced and have positive influences on the immune system and overall health. Disruption of the delicate microflora can result in a dominance of “bad” and pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics (active lactobacillus and bifidobacteria cultures) from foods such as yogurt, and supplements can be used to support your colon.
Exercise
Get moving! I like to think of physical exercise is beneficial to health in two main ways. It provides all the obvious health benefits, toned muscles, muscle endurance, an effective way to maintain weight or weight loss, improved energy levels, better sleep and improved mood.
