Energy Drinks and Your Kids - Webber Naturals

WRITTEN BY  Ana Patrícia- 29 August 2011

Red Bull, Monster, Rock Star, Full Throttle... Just a few of the energy beverages Webber Naturals thinks your children should avoid.

We shouldn't be mixing caffeine and kids, especially large doses of caffeine! Recent studies are finding energy drinks can pose some serious health risks to children.

Most kids love the sugary snacks, soda and junk food. My boss recently told me a story of how his young boys practically dive into the discovered hidden stash of chocolate and eat as much as they can before someone puts a stop to the sugary binging! Even the older highschool kids have a penchant for sugar (albeit a little more dignified than a swan dive into a bag of candy) often drinking pop and starting to discover their taste for sugar filled coffee drinks.

Don't get me wrong, these aren't all necessarly bad things that must be avoided at all costs. Just remember: everything in moderation, my friends! Or else you and your children might end up looking like Calvin here:

But something else seems to have appeared on your kids snack radar: energy drinks. Now this is where I say, even in moderation, you should think twice before letting your kids drink these. Compared to coffee, energy drinks have a lot more caffeine: one 250 ml can of Coca-Cola has around 26 mg of caffeine, versus one 75 ml can of Rockstar 'energy shot,' which has 200 mg of caffeine! And people who don't realize this often have more than one in a day!

The Globe and Mail takes a deeper look into the numbers and health risks of energy drinks and what it all means for your kids.

Just remember, kids don't need this kind of help to get through the day and neither do you! Rest and relaxation are the best means of recharging your batteries. When your body is tired, it's sending you a message: give yourself a break!

Webber Naturals Pop Quiz: Regular or Diet Soda?

WRITTEN BY  Ana Patrícia- 10 August 2011

Can't resist the fizzy flavours of soda? Which is worse: regular soft drinks or diet soft drinks?

Webber Naturals looks at the pros and cons of both, regular and diet pops...

We've heard it all before:

"Don't drink soda! It's bad for you!" or "Soda is fine, just in moderation."

"Stay away from diet soft drinks! It's all artificial!"

"Don't buy regular pop! It's full of sugar!"

So, really, what's up with the fizzy delight? Since the late 18th century, when a Swedish chemist decided to add flavours to carbonated water, soda has only grown in popularity. It's progressed from the drink traditionally served in pharmacies of the 19th century to multi-billion dollar corporations with mass produced products available all over the world.

As the industry has grown and our science has progressed, so has our health awareness. There are tons of options out there now when it comes to choosing your soft drink: flavour and brand; can or botte or fountain; small or medium or large (or even jumbo); and, here's the big question today, regular or diet?

Get to know the pros and cons of regular and diet soft drinks and then decide for yourself: regular or diet soda?
