Krill are small shrimp-like creatures that live in the oceans and are way down the food chain. A whale can eat up to 8,000 pounds of krill each day, but you only need one or two capsules per day to make a whale of a difference in your health.
These tiny crustaceans are a superior source of omega-3 oils - the essential fatty acids so important for maintaining our hearts, brains, skin and joints. Flaxseed, cold water fish and fish oils also provide omega-3 fatty acids, but krill oil is the new kid on the block with a few distinct advantages.
Krill oil has a higher concentration of key fatty acids than fish oils, so a smaller daily dose can produce similar results. Sustainability: What about the whales?
Scientists estimate that over 500 million tonnes of krill are moving through our oceans. Their biomass (mass of living things) is about twice that of all the humans on Earth. At certain times of year, krill swarms in the oceans are so huge they can be seen from space! But they still need to be protected. The krill harvest that brings you RoyalRed Krill Oil is regulated by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR). They set catch limits and only license certain companies to do krill harvesting.
What the Research Says:
Cholesterol: In one study, 120 people were given krill oil, fish oil or a placebo. Krill oil reduced LDL (commonly referred to as “bad”) choles- terol by 34% and increased HDL (“good”) cholesterol by 43.5% com- pared to the placebo. In comparison, fish oil reduced LDL cholesterol by 4.6% and increased HDL cholesterol by 4.2%. Krill also lowered triglycerides.
PMS: Preliminary research suggests krill oil may help reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS).
Arthritis: A study in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition examined krill oil (300 mg daily) compared to a
placebo and found that krill oil was effective at reducing arthritis symptoms and inflammation.
