Learn more about Coenzyme Q10, Heart Health

Feature summary

Coenzyme Q10, also called CoQ10, is an essential nutrient that helps trigger cellular energy production. Low levels of CoQ10 have been associated with compromised immune function, gum disease and heart failure. Coenzyme Q10, 100 mg from webber naturals® is a high potency antioxidant and a key nutrient to slow aging.

Research in brief

Statin drugs (also called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) have been shown to deplete the body’s stores of CoQ10, even beyond age-related declines.

Clinical trials have shown that patients being treated for elevated cholesterol with statin medications are actually at increased risk for cardiovascular problems, such as heart failure.

This is because statin drugs not only block production of cholesterol, they also block CoQ10 production—and CoQ10 is needed for a healthy heart. Myalgia (muscle pain) and liver damage have also been reported following statin drug use.

Those on statin medications should consult their physician. They may benefit from supplementing with 100 to 400 mg of CoQ10 per day. There is no known negative interaction; in fact, supplemental CoQ10 may reverse statin drug-induced myalgia and heart muscle weakness.

Supplemental CoQ10 has not been shown to reduce statins’ cholesterol-lowering properties or to have any adverse reaction related to statin use.
