A good chef knows that a sanitary kitchen is a prerequisite to preparing safe, high-quality meals. After all, substandard cleaning habits can easily lead to pest infestations, spoilage, and foodborne illness. But why use harsh cleaning agents that expose you and your family to toxins – more dangerous than the grease and bacteria you’re removing when there’s no reason to?
Keep your kitchen clean the healthy way with these 6 powerful non-toxic kitchen cleaners:
1. Soap and Water
Good ol’ soap and water is one of the best cleaning agents around. You don’t even need the anti-bacterial varieties – most natural soaps, such as a liquid castile soap, will do. They work by trapping bacteria and removing it from surfaces as you rinse. The trick? Follow your soak down with a thorough rinse, and then dry with a clean cloth.
This one is a kitchen classic. Vinegar has the ability to cuts grease, buff chrome, and remove fingerprints and smudges from stainless steel. With a little help, it can also clean glass and unclog drains. That’s a whole lot of cleaning power!
- To clean glass, mix vinegar 1:1.
- To unclog drains, use ¼ cup of baking soda followed by ½ cup of vinegar.
3. Baking Soda
Baking soda easily absorbs refrigerator or garbage bin odours and removes stains. A water/baking soda paste can clean plastic food containers, steel sinks, countertops, microwaves, walls, and more.
Outside of salads and baking, lemons are incredibly useful in the kitchen. For starters, lemon is a great mild disinfectant and grease fighter. When paired with coarse sea salt, a lemon wedge turns into a scrubbing tool, perfect for wooden cutting boards and removing rust stains from cutlery. And of course, lemon is a lovely air freshener – simply boil wedges with water and herbs!
5. Olive Oil
Did you know that olive oil is a great aid for lifting dirt and polishing wood? Simply combine 2 tbsp of olive oil, 2 tbsp of white vinegar, and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, and start polishing the wooden tables and chairs in your kitchen!
6. Hydrogen Peroxide
Easily disinfect cupboard door knobs, refrigerator handles, and faucet taps with 3% hydrogen peroxide. This non-toxic and environmentally friendly solution will handily disinfect surfaces following regular cleaning. Simply apply it using a spray bottle and leave it to air dry.
With the right ingredients, a clean kitchen is a non-toxic kitchen.
