What is Gout?

Gout is a common form of arthritis, especially in men. It occurs when uric acid accumulates in the blood (hyperuricemia) and crystallizes to form a shape resembling a needle. Symptoms of gout include sudden attacks of excruciating stabbing pain and inflammation, often affecting the joint at the base of the big toe.

What Causes Gout?

Uric acid is produced in the body during the breakdown of purines – chemical compounds that are found in certain foods. Since it is a by-product of many foods, gout symptoms can be directly linked to diet. Rich foods and alcohol are the main culprits, though gout can also be brought on by stress, certain medications, crash dieting, or injury to the joint.

Foods to Avoid When You Have Gout

You can reduce your risk of gout attacks by limiting alcohol and foods high in purines such as some fish and seafood, including anchovies, sardines, mackerel, scallops, herring, mussels, codfish, trout, and haddock. Other foods that are considered high in purines are meats such as bacon, turkey, veal, venison, liver, beef kidney, brain, and sweetbread. Lastly, alcoholic beverages are also high in purines.

Foods that Help Gout Symptoms

If you are experiencing a gout attack, consuming raw fruits and vegetables can help, especially blueberries, cherries, and strawberries.
