Antioxidants are compounds that fight the destructive effects of unstable molecules called free radicals. Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts and seeds, are teeming with antioxidants, including carotenoids (plant pigments), vitamins C and E, and other polyphenols (micronutrients) such as resveratrol. Other antioxidants include coenzyme Q10 and curcuminoids (found in turmeric root). These nutrients have a high-ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), meaning they help quash free radicals and guard against tissue damage to help maintain good health.
